Position Overview:

Whatcom County Public Works is seeking a qualified candidate for the role of Industrial Safety & Training Specialist. This pivotal position is dedicated to the creation and implementation of a comprehensive safety and training program tailored for the Maintenance and Operations and Equipment Services divisions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver training programs aimed at enhancing the skills and performance of personnel across all levels within the Maintenance and Operations and Equipment Services.
  • Focus on improving technical job competencies, fostering an internal talent pool, and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards while prioritizing workplace safety.
  • Administer, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate training initiatives related to equipment, job tasks, and safety protocols.
  • Conduct assessments of job site safety and facilitate both individual and group training sessions in various settings, including fieldwork and classroom environments.
  • Act as the primary liaison for risk management, safety compliance, and citizen claims, collaborating closely with Public Works staff, other County departments, and external vendors.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, possess proficiency in operating a range of heavy construction vehicles and equipment, and have experience in leadership or supervisory roles. A desire to contribute to safety and training excellence within the Maintenance and Operations and Equipment Services is essential.

Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Maintenance and Operation Superintendent.

Compensation:
Salary Range: MCBA- Range 180.0

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED with five (5) years of relevant experience in road or heavy construction, including at least two years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety or a related discipline, along with three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in managing technical training programs, particularly with road maintenance or heavy construction equipment.
  • Proficiency in computer operations and various office software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • A valid driver's license and a driving record that meets County standards.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or equivalent experience in managing a CDL training and renewal program.
