POSITION SUMMARY

The Lead Coordinator for Specimen Collection Operations is dedicated to upholding the mission and vision of MLK Community Healthcare. This role is pivotal in managing the pre-analytic processes, which includes supervising phlebotomists and overseeing specimen collection protocols. Reporting directly to the Laboratory Manager, this professional will foster strong collaborative relationships with physicians and other healthcare personnel. The position is accountable for ensuring quality in all operational processes, meeting turnaround times, and guaranteeing the accuracy and reliability of test reports. This role emphasizes teamwork and compliance with established policies among laboratory staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee the pre-analytic operations, ensuring that blood and specimen collections adhere to both state and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with departmental leaders to ensure compliance with CAP and state standards in pre-analytic work processes.
  • Participate in the Quality Management Program, working alongside other leaders to enhance quality across all services under CLIA. This includes gathering, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting data for various committees and educational sessions.
  • Supervise the training and competency assessment of newly hired phlebotomists.
  • Utilize effective problem-solving skills to assist in resolving testing and reporting challenges, while maintaining the integrity and security of departmental documentation to achieve hospital quality objectives.
  • Manage the scheduling of staff and oversee PTO requests within the department.
  • Engage collaboratively with other department leaders to enhance service quality throughout the hospital.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements within assigned areas, including managing meal breaks, corrected reports, attendance, overtime, and punctuality.
  • Conduct quality assurance for laboratory information systems.
  • Address and resolve pre-analytic and related issues as they arise.
  • Exhibit professionalism in behavior, actions, and communications.
  • Pursue educational opportunities for leadership skill development across various platforms.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required.
B. Qualifications/Experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in blood specimen collections; 3 years preferred.
  • At least 1 year of leadership experience in an acute care environment is required.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
  • Proficient in Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and various computer applications.
  • Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician License is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is necessary.
  • Strong organizational abilities with the capacity to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Advanced technical skills in MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Project, Visio, etc.
