Position Overview
POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Specimen Collection Supervisor plays a crucial role in advancing the mission and vision of MLK Community Healthcare. This position is accountable for overseeing the pre-analytic operations, which includes managing phlebotomists and the processes involved in specimen collection. Reporting directly to the Laboratory Manager, this individual will foster positive working relationships with physicians and other healthcare staff. The supervisor is responsible for ensuring quality in all operational processes, meeting turnaround times, and delivering accurate and timely test reports. This role emphasizes teamwork and collaboration with other leaders and staff within the laboratory, while ensuring compliance with established policies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the pre-analytic operations, ensuring that blood and specimen collections adhere to state and federal regulations.
- Collaborate with departmental leaders to ensure compliance with CAP and state standards in pre-analytic work processes.
- Engage in the Quality Management Program, working alongside other department leaders to enhance quality in all operational processes under CLIA. This includes developing and implementing strategies to monitor and improve service quality for the benefit of both patients and clinicians, as well as participating in data collection, analysis, and reporting for various committees and educational sessions.
- Supervise the training of newly hired phlebotomists and assess their competency.
- Utilize effective problem-solving skills to assist in resolving testing and reporting issues, while maintaining the integrity and security of departmental documentation to meet quality objectives.
- Manage the scheduling of staff and oversee PTO requests within the department.
- Work collaboratively with other department leaders to enhance service quality across the healthcare facility.
- Ensure staff adherence to hospital policies and regulatory requirements in their designated areas, including managing meal breaks, corrected reports, attendance, overtime, and punctuality.
- Conduct quality assurance assessments for laboratory information systems.
- Address and resolve pre-analytic and related issues as they arise.
- Exhibit professionalism in behavior, actions, and communications.
- Pursue ongoing education to develop leadership skills through various opportunities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience is required.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in blood specimen collections is required; 3 years is preferred.
- At least 1 year of leadership experience in an acute care environment is required.
SPECIAL SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE
- Proficient in laboratory information systems and computer applications.
- Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician License is required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficient technical skills in MS PowerPoint, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Project, Visio, and other relevant software.
