Key Responsibilities:

Project Design Phase:

  • Oversee the design of solar projects from initial concept through to final construction, collaborating closely with project managers, EPC contractors, and engineering teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Act as a technical partner to project managers, assisting in navigating technical challenges and understanding project scope, schedule, and stakeholder needs.
  • Define interconnection design requirements in alignment with PPA and interconnection stipulations.
  • Establish the design basis for solar PV plants and/or battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Conduct energy performance modeling utilizing PVSyst software, with familiarity in NREL SAM and Plant Predict being advantageous.
  • Review calculations related to string sizing and ampacity using appropriate software to comply with NEC standards.
  • Analyze geotechnical reports to assess site conditions and their impact on electrical cabling.
  • Evaluate short circuit calculations to ensure equipment and cabling meet safety standards.
  • Utilize Excel for sizing solar PV systems and BESS.
  • Review grounding studies using CDEGS software based on prior experience.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and contractors to create comprehensive design packages for utility-scale solar PV systems and BESS.
  • Review and approve various design stages of high voltage substations and PV plant drawings.
  • Engage with utilities, contractors, and regulatory bodies to address technical concerns and ensure project deliverables align with stakeholder requirements.
  • Prepare specifications for major equipment in collaboration with consultants.
  • Review electrical calculations, including load flow and grounding assessments.

Construction Phase:

  • Provide field support during construction for design inquiries or modifications.
  • Conduct project site visits as necessary.
  • Assist in testing and commissioning activities, including developing site test plans and reviewing testing outcomes.
  • Document technical lessons learned throughout the construction lifecycle.
  • Track project deliverables and revisions systematically.
  • Facilitate coordination meetings as required.
  • Review test reports to ensure reliable operation upon energization.
  • Ensure thorough documentation for effective hand-off to operations and compliance teams.

Development Phase:

  • Support pre-construction project managers with technical expertise during the development phase, revising design layouts and contract documents based on lessons learned.
  • Stay updated on the latest NEC changes and industry trends.
  • Engage in continuous learning through technical articles and training in solar PV and BESS.
  • Develop and refine solar PV design standards and methodologies.
  • Evaluate new technologies and establish standards for solar and BESS.
  • Encourage innovative thinking and the exploration of new ideas.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is mandatory.
  • PE license or the ability to obtain one within a year is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 7 years in a lead engineering role for solar projects, particularly in utility-scale power generation.
  • Proven experience in design engineering and construction support for multiple utility-scale solar PV projects.
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code and safety standards.
  • Experience reviewing various design stages for solar projects.
  • Collaboration with contractors and vendors is essential.
  • Experience in utility-scale BESS and wind projects is a plus.

Additional Skills:

  • Strong technical acumen and a proactive work ethic.
  • Ability to manage projects with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to lead cross-functional teams effectively.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Experience in utility-scale wind projects is advantageous.

Technical Proficiencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of electrical equipment and transmission design standards.
  • Expertise in NEC Article 690.
  • Proficiency in solar performance modeling software.
  • Experience optimizing PV layouts using relevant tools.
  • Understanding of module performance under extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to conduct and review electrical calculations and designs.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with a focus on achieving goals.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and adaptable to new software.

The expected starting pay range for this role is $103,000 USD - $139,000. This range is an estimate and may vary based on factors such as location, experience, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern Energy offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and retirement savings plans.
