Responsibilities

Job Purpose
This position is accountable for defining the overall project design criteria for utility-scale solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and interconnections. The role involves overseeing the engineering of primarily solar projects throughout the development, design, construction, and commissioning phases, ensuring a smooth transition to the Operations Team with necessary training. The individual will collaborate with Project Management teams (Pre-Construction and Construction) and external contractors to create Utility Scale Solar PV design/construction packages, including interconnection specifications, solar design parameters, array layouts, electrical one-lines, collection systems, and more. Additionally, support for utility-scale wind projects may be required.

Key Accountabilities

For Projects in Design Phase:
  • Direct solar project design from initial concept to final construction, collaborating closely with project managers, EPC contractors, and Engineers of Record to ensure project success.
  • Act as a technical partner to project managers, assisting them in navigating technical challenges while understanding scope, schedule, and stakeholder needs.
  • Define Interconnection Design Requirements based on Interconnection and PPA specifications.
  • Establish the Basis of Design for Solar PV plants and/or BESS.
  • Conduct energy performance modeling using PVSyst software; familiarity with NREL SAM and Plant Predict is advantageous.
  • Review string size calculations and ampacity studies using Cymcap, Excel, or equivalent software in compliance with NEC standards.
  • Evaluate geotechnical reports to ascertain rho values, moisture contents, temperatures, and ampacity of AC and DC cabling.
  • Analyze short circuit calculations to determine appropriate ratings for equipment and cabling.
  • Utilize Excel for sizing Solar PV systems and BESS.
  • Review grounding studies performed in CDEGS, leveraging prior knowledge of the software.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and contractors to produce solar PV and BESS design/construction packages, including solar array layouts and equipment installation details.
  • Review and approve high voltage substation, medium voltage collection, and PV plant drawing packages at various design stages.
  • Engage with utilities, contractors, vendors, testers, regulators, independent engineers, and internal teams to address technical concerns and ensure design deliverables meet project requirements.
  • Prepare specifications for major equipment with assistance from consultants as necessary.
  • Review electrical calculations including load flow, grounding, short circuit, and arc flash as required.
For Projects in Construction Phase:
  • Provide field support during construction for design inquiries or modifications.
  • Conduct project site visits as needed.
  • Assist in testing and commissioning activities, including developing comprehensive site test plans and reviewing test results.
  • Compile a list of technical lessons learned throughout the construction lifecycle.
  • Monitor deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in or lead coordination meetings as necessary.
  • Review test reports to ensure reliable operation during energization.
  • Ensure proper documentation for hand-off to Operations Engineering and Compliance teams.
For Projects in Development Phase:
  • Provide technical support to pre-construction project managers, reviewing facility designs and layout drawings.
  • Stay updated on the latest NEC changes.
  • Engage with technical literature and training to remain informed about new products and design techniques.
  • Develop and update Solar PV design standards and work processes.
  • Establish evaluation methods for new technologies in solar/BESS.
  • Maintain an open mindset for innovation and creative solutions.
Qualifications

Education / Experience / Qualifications Required

Educational Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • PE license or the ability to obtain one within one year.
Work Experience
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience as a lead engineer in solar projects, preferably in utility-scale power projects.
  • Experience in design engineering and construction support for greenfield Utility Scale Solar PV projects across multiple plants.
  • Familiarity with National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and NFPA 70E.
  • Experience reviewing various design stages related to Solar projects.
  • Experience collaborating with Contractors and Vendors.
  • Experience in utility-scale BESS and Wind is a plus.
Additional Qualifications
  • Strong technical skills and a proactive, self-motivated work ethic.
  • Proven ability to manage projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
  • Experience in utility-scale wind projects is advantageous.
Technical Skills
  • Expertise in medium- and high-voltage substation electrical equipment and transmission design.
  • Proficient in relevant industry standards and codes.
  • Expert knowledge of NEC Article 690.
  • Proficient in solar performance modeling software.
  • Experience optimizing PV layouts with relevant tools.
  • Knowledge of module applicability related to extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform and review essential electrical calculations.
  • Strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and adaptability to new software.
The expected starting pay range for this role is $103,000 USD - $139,000. This range is an estimate and may vary based on factors such as location, experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern's compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time employees. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, disability insurance, life insurance, family care benefits, employee assistance programs, paid time off, retirement savings plans with employer contributions, and employee referral bonuses.
