Research Responsibilities:
- Possesses a comprehensive understanding of researchers' experimental objectives and provides guidance, training, and collaboration to uphold established protocols. Monitors and adjusts growth conditions and environmental controls, including temperature, light cycles, growth media, fertilization, and watering techniques. Maintains a diverse collection for educational purposes and may be the primary caretaker for various plant species, including large monocultures and genetically modified organisms. Proactively identifies and resolves issues to prevent adverse effects on research outcomes.
Teaching Support:
- Familiarizes with course objectives and supplies necessary plant materials to facilitate educational goals.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Engages with faculty and staff to assess project requirements and responsibilities. Effectively communicates policies, plant health, and facility conditions.
Training and Support:
- Addresses inquiries regarding plant care, pest management, and growth techniques. Serves as a knowledgeable resource for users on cultivation methods.
Pest and Disease Management:
- Evaluates and diagnoses pest issues, implementing chemical treatments as necessary to maintain plant health. Responsible for pesticide application, maintenance of equipment, and accurate record-keeping. Ensures compliance with USDA/APHIS regulations and maintains appropriate permits and quarantine protocols.
Facility Management:
- Collaborates with faculty and physical resources teams to ensure that facility upgrades align with research and teaching needs.
- Works with physical resources to oversee the maintenance, repair, and enhancement of mechanical and environmental systems within greenhouses and growth chambers. Identifies and resolves issues promptly to ensure optimal facility operation. Supervises the overall functioning of the growth facility, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and efficiency.
- Acts as the primary contact for emergency situations, ensuring the safety of plants and facility contents during incidents such as equipment failures or power outages. Communicates facility status promptly to safeguard research and plant integrity.
Growth Facility Administration:
- Develops and implements policies and procedures, training staff and users on safety protocols and operational guidelines.
- Manages budgetary responsibilities, ensuring fiscal accountability while striving to meet departmental objectives.
- Oversees inventory management, ensuring that all supplies and equipment are ordered and maintained within budget constraints.
- Responsible for space allocation among research groups and maintains accurate records. Researches and implements a web-based space reservation system.
- Ensures safety within growth facilities, maintaining pesticide logs, chemical inventories, and spill response procedures.
Supervision and Training:
- Supervises support staff and is responsible for training all facility users in plant care and safety protocols.
