Job Title: Laboratory Director, Center for Bits and Atoms

Massachusetts Institute of Technology is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Director to lead the Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA). The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of CBA's research and rapid-prototyping facilities, with a focus on ensuring the smooth operation of the laboratory and providing exceptional support to users.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the selection, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of CBA's major tools
  • Manage facility access, safety, training, and approval
  • Provide feedback to users and advise projects on their research requirements
  • Evaluate and introduce new processes and workflows
  • Assist with affiliated courses and supplement them with topical recitations
  • Serve as the lead liaison with counterpart MIT offices
  • Advise and assist with equipment selection and installation for off-campus facilities
Requirements:
  • A minimum of five years of managing a research, prototyping, production, or educational laboratory facility
  • Mastery of digital fabrication and laboratory research workflows, including expertise in CAD, CAM, electronics, programming, and instrumentation
  • Robust interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask
  • Proven problem-solving ability
  • Independent initiative with incomplete information
