Mission of the Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services:
The Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services (ODLSS) is dedicated to delivering high-quality, specially tailored instructional support and services for all diverse learners in their least restrictive settings. We collaborate with various units, particularly schools and Networks, aiming to enhance the academic success of all diverse learners by ensuring they receive meaningful access to grade-level core instruction within their local schools or schools of choice.

Position Overview:
The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Itinerant Teacher collaborates with evaluation teams, educators, parents, and other early childhood specialists to assist general and special education personnel in implementing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This ensures that services for children with disabilities are appropriately developed and executed. The Citywide Itinerant Teacher adheres to all Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) standards and special education regulations to create Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and identify the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

Key Responsibilities:
The ECSE Itinerant Teacher will be responsible for the following:

  • Deliver direct instruction and consultative services as outlined in student IEPs.
  • Work in partnership with general education teachers, related services personnel, and other school staff to implement strategies that promote student success in the LRE.
  • Identify and apply adaptations and modifications to the classroom curriculum, physical environment, and instructional methods.
  • Coordinate and facilitate educational and behavioral strategies between home and school settings.
  • Gather and maintain data to track progress towards achieving IEP goals and benchmarks.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, school personnel, and parents.
  • Participate in FIE/IEP and annual IEP meetings.
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide support as needed.
  • Update caseload and schedule and submit to the manager weekly.
Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution is required, with a preference for a concentration in Early Childhood, Early Childhood Special Education, or a related field.
  • A current, valid State of Illinois Early Childhood Certification (PEL) is required, with an appropriate endorsement in special education, or a Learning Behavior Specialist License with an endorsement in Early Childhood Education is preferred.
  • Bilingual candidates are preferred.
Experience:
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience teaching or supporting students with disabilities, ideally within a large urban school district.
  • Experience in providing services, participating in IEP meetings, and writing reports within educational settings.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a team of professionals.
  • Experience engaging with students and families from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with CPS, community, state, and national resources and materials suitable for preschool special education students.
  • Experience collaborating with diverse families, community organizations, and staff.
  • Understanding of evidence-based best practices in early childhood education.
  • Knowledge of the Early Learning & Development Standards and their implications for diverse learners.
  • Exceptional coaching, communication, and persuasive skills, including verbal, written, and presentation abilities.
  • Demonstrated instructional leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, team members, students, parents, and advocates.
  • Ability to encourage and promote parental involvement and participation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and be a creative problem solver and team player.
  • Ability to take shared ownership of work and expected outcomes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications and CPS IMPACT.
  • Possession of a current driver's license and the ability to travel as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities.
Employment Conditions:
As a condition of employment with Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
  • Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency: Employees must reside within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. This requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions; however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
  • Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19: Unless exempted for medical or religious reasons, all employees must be up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccinations, including boosters, and provide proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire. "Up-to-date" is defined as being at least two weeks past all primary vaccine doses and any applicable boosters.
