Director of Government Relations

Federation of American Scientists (FAS) is a non-profit organization committed to using science and technology for the betterment of humanity. Our mission is to advance evidence-based, non-partisan policy priorities and promote a culture of transparency, equity, and inclusion.
We are seeking an experienced Director of Government Affairs to lead our government relations efforts across the executive and legislative branches. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of designing and implementing successful government affairs strategies, building coalitions, and advocating for policy change. As a key member of our leadership team, you will work closely with our strategy, communications, and subject matter experts to drive impact across policy areas including Emerging Technology and Competitiveness, Science Policy, Science Funding, Climate and Environment, Clean Energy, and Government Capacity.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement comprehensive government affairs strategies to advance FAS's policy priorities.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including lawmakers, regulators, industry leaders, and advocacy groups.
- Cultivate partnerships and coalitions to support policy initiatives.
- Advocate for policy change through effective communication, lobbying, and issue education.
- Collaborate with internal teams to develop messaging, communications plans, and issue briefs.
Requirements
- Mastery of key aspects of the policy entrepreneurship toolkit, including finding creative pathways to shepherd sound policy ideas to implementation.
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement an overarching government affairs strategy focused on impact, along with key tactics and measures of success.
- Proven ability to break down silos and build connectivity with people across teams to work together around a common goal.
- Strong network across the executive and legislative branches of government and able to leverage their network to cultivate meaningful partnerships for policy solutions.
- A strong understanding of the federal policy landscape, particularly in areas related to emerging technology, science policy, and clean energy.
What We Offer
- A competitive salary range of $150,000 - $200,000.
- A hybrid work environment, with 2-3 days per week working remotely and 2-3 days per week in the office.
