Senior Director, Government Relations

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is seeking an experienced Senior Director, Government Relations to lead our government affairs efforts. This key role will focus on developing and implementing effective government relations strategies to advance AIA's federal policy objectives.

About the Job:

This Senior Director will be responsible for managing a high-performing team of lobbyists and government relations professionals, directing their efforts to achieve successful outcomes in Congress and the Executive Branch. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of success in federal lobbying and policy development, with a deep understanding of the federal government's role in shaping the built environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lobbying and Policy Development: Lead the development and implementation of AIA's federal lobbying strategy, working closely with senior leadership and stakeholders to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Team Management: Direct and manage a team of lobbyists and government relations professionals, providing guidance and oversight to ensure effective execution of government relations efforts.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct thorough research and analysis of federal policies and legislation impacting architects and the built environment, providing recommendations to inform AIA's advocacy efforts.
  • Candidate Selection and Support: Collaborate with the Government Advocacy Committee to identify and support qualified candidates for federal appointments, ensuring alignment with AIA's values and goals.

Requirements:

  • Federally Registered Lobbyist: Proven experience as a registered lobbyist with a deep understanding of federal lobbying regulations and best practices.
  • 5-7 Years of Experience: High-level understanding of how to successfully lobby Congress and the Executive Branch, including at least 5-7 years' experience in advancing legislative and regulatory proposals.
  • Exceptional Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate high-performing teams, provide clear direction, and drive results-oriented outcomes.
  • Bachelor's Degree: Relevant degree in political science or related field required; campaign and/or grassroots/grasstops experience desired but not necessary.

Compensation: $120,000 - $140,000 per year, depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, 401(k), paid time off, flexible spending accounts, income protection, tuition reimbursement, and more.
