Job Summary

The Domestic Violence Division Bilingual Attorney Negotiator plays a critical role in ensuring the effective resolution of civil protection orders, custody, visitation, financial support, and property distribution cases. This position requires a unique blend of legal expertise, negotiation skills, and cultural competence to work with diverse litigants and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review cases, interview litigants, and identify legal issues to inform negotiation strategies.
  • Negotiate and draft proposed orders for judicial consideration, including custody, visitation, and property distribution.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda of law to support negotiation and mediation efforts.
  • Monitor and track changes in legislation impacting the domestic violence division.
  • Collaborate with judicial officers, stakeholders, and community partners to provide training and education on domestic violence issues.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited university or college with a law degree and admission to practice law before the Courts of the District of Columbia.
  • At least three years of domestic violence practice experience, with a preference for family law expertise.
  • One year of experience in alternative dispute resolution, including mediation, arbitration, negotiation, and/or case evaluation.
  • Ability to speak, interpret, read, and write Spanish and English fluently.
