Job Title: Policy Counsel

Brady is seeking a highly motivated and experienced attorney to join our policy team, focusing on legislation, policy analysis, research, and writing projects related to gun violence prevention in America.

Job Summary:

This is a full-time position that can be remote or based in Washington DC, with travel required. The successful candidate will support Brady's legislative and regulatory work, including drafting legislation, analyzing proposed and existing laws, and recommending organizational positions on bills and executive actions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Drafting and analyzing legislation, including local, state, and federal laws
  • Developing expertise on relevant state and federal legislative landscapes and jurisprudence
  • Identifying and researching opportunities for new or different legislative approaches, executive actions, or improvements in implementation aimed at preventing gun violence
  • Serving as a legal and subject matter expert for internal Brady staff and external stakeholders
  • Drafting and delivering written and oral testimony and public comments in support or opposition to policies or legislation
  • Collaborating with Brady team members and stakeholders to advance gun violence prevention goals
Requirements:
  • J.D. degree and admission to a state or District of Columbia bar
  • At least 5 years of legal experience, with 2 years of experience analyzing bills and working with legislators or policy advocates
  • Familiarity with the legislative process and strong ability to understand and translate legislative text and policy proposals
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and analytical skills, with the ability to pivot quickly on tasks or issues as needed
  • Strong presentation and public-speaking skills, with the ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences
  • Self-motivation, creativity, dependability, and accountability, with a strong work ethic and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working on gun violence prevention issues and policies
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team and as part of a broader coalition
  • Commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism, especially as it relates to policy and legislation
