Job Summary

The Southeastern Louisiana University Police Department is seeking a highly skilled Communications Officer 1 to serve as the primary point of contact for emergency and non-emergency calls. This critical role requires exceptional communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receiving and Routing Calls: Answer and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching units and personnel as needed.
  • Radio and Telephone Operations: Operate radio and telephone equipment to communicate with officers, dispatchers, and other emergency services.
  • Record Keeping and Data Entry: Accurately record and document all calls, incidents, and responses in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with officers, dispatchers, and other department staff to ensure seamless communication and effective response to emergencies.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; college credit or degree in a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Six months of experience in a related field, such as customer service, dispatching, or law enforcement.
  • Certifications: Valid driver's license and certification through the Southeastern Defensive Driving Course required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Business or Technical School Training: Six months of training in a business or clerical-related curriculum may be substituted for required experience.
  • College Training: 15 semester hours of college credit may be substituted for required experience.
Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with frequent interruptions and changing priorities. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively in a team environment and maintain a high level of professionalism and composure in emergency situations.
