Senior Media Relations Strategist

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) is in search of a Senior Media Relations Strategist to support the Managing Director of Communications in enhancing VEDP's visibility through the execution and management of media campaigns that highlight Virginia's key sectors, economic initiatives, and workforce solutions. This role will focus on uncovering trends and compelling narratives for press releases and media outreach; composing media responses, event briefings, and key messaging; and generating content for sector-specific case studies, annual reports, and other necessary publications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the execution of a robust media campaign that elevates brand recognition and articulates Virginia's business advantages.
  • Draft and disseminate press releases and media advisories.
  • Develop strategic media pitches and cultivate relationships with journalists.
  • Coordinate logistics and execution of media tours.
  • Monitor and document media inquiries and responses by topic.
  • Regularly update industry-specific content and ranking statistics for media responses and promotional materials.
  • Assist in preparing media briefs and responses.
  • Manage media monitoring tools by updating contact lists, ensuring accuracy for Virginia media and industry-specific contacts, and tracking media coverage.
  • Foster relationships with internal stakeholders to enhance storytelling efforts.
  • Support the drafting and editing of official announcements, quotes, event briefings, and media advisories.
  • Contribute to speech writing, talking points, and other public relations tasks as needed.
  • Maintain a database of quotes for the Marketing & Communications Division.
  • Assist the Communications Director in creating and updating project case studies for each target industry across Virginia.
  • Support the development of proprietary content, including thought leadership pieces.

Required Skills:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in managing multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Sound judgment in decision-making processes.
  • Understanding of economic development principles and familiarity with state and local government programs is preferred.

Experience Required:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in communications or public relations.
  • Proven experience in media relations, including planning and executing media campaigns.
  • Experience in engaging with national media outlets.

This position may involve travel and representing VEDP at various functions and events. A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a passport are necessary.
