Senior Media Relations Manager

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) is on the lookout for a Senior Media Relations Manager to support the Managing Director of Communications in enhancing VEDP's visibility through the execution and management of effective earned media initiatives. This role is pivotal in promoting Virginia's key sectors, economic development initiatives, workforce solutions, and testimonials from industry leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and execution of a robust earned media strategy that elevates brand recognition and showcases Virginia's business advantages.
  • Draft and disseminate press releases and media advisories.
  • Formulate strategic media pitches and cultivate relationships with journalists.
  • Coordinate logistics and execution for media tours.
  • Monitor and track media inquiries and responses by topic.
  • Regularly update industry-specific content and ranking statistics for media responses and value proposition materials.
  • Assist in drafting media briefs and responses.
  • Manage media monitoring tools by updating media lists, ensuring accuracy of contacts for Virginia and industry-specific media, and tracking coverage.
  • Foster relationships with internal stakeholders to enhance storytelling.
  • Support the drafting and editing of announcements, quotes, event briefings, and media advisories for the Governor.
  • Contribute to speech writing, talking points, and other public relations tasks as necessary.
  • Maintain a database of quotes for the Marketing & Communications Division.
  • Assist the Communications Director in creating and updating project case studies for each target industry across Virginia.
  • Contribute to the development of owned content, including thought leadership pieces.

  • Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Sound judgment in decision-making processes.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Preferred understanding of economic development principles and government programs at state and local levels.

Experience Required:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in communications or public relations.
  • Proven experience in media relations, including planning and executing earned media campaigns.
  • Experience in engaging with and pitching to national media outlets.

This position may require travel and representation of VEDP at various functions and events. A valid Virginia driver's license and the ability to obtain a passport are necessary. All candidates must apply through the official website and submit three writing samples. Salary minimum: $70,000.
