Key Responsibilities


The Student Retention Support Specialist reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Student Development and is dedicated to assisting students who may be at risk of not completing their degrees.

This role involves the coordination and execution of initiatives aimed at preventing student stop-out, alongside providing essential support services and implementing immediate intervention strategies for identified students to lower the stop-out rate. The specialist will gather, analyze, and utilize data from intervention systems to formulate strategies addressing student retention; develop data-informed approaches focusing on problem-solving, self-advocacy, academic mindset, self-regulation, persistence, and positive behaviors to disseminate throughout the campus community; research exemplary programs for student retention; organize intervention activities including learning communities, orientations, and collaborate with re-engagement coaches; manage retention intervention systems and resources; coordinate scholarship and need-based grant opportunities with financial aid officers; and maintain accurate records and documentation for each student, evaluating data such as grades, tracking student progress and performance, providing outreach and early interventions, and referring students for personal, educational, and career counseling.

The specialist will review academic transcripts, grade reports, and other relevant documents to determine the most suitable path for expediting degree completion and student success.

Support will be provided to students in navigating their academic journeys by facilitating access to academic support, fostering creative problem-solving, and ensuring timely connections to both academic and non-academic resources.

The Student Retention Support Specialist will engage with students through face-to-face interactions, phone calls, emails, or video conferencing to maintain communication and build rapport.

This role also involves coordinating and supporting various phases of retention projects, collaborating continuously with key university offices to connect students with resources available both on campus and within the community.

Compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and adherence to all university policies and procedures is mandatory.

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary within the scope of the position.

Required Qualifications

Essential Criteria

Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field such as Education, Psychology, Business, Social Work, or Counseling is preferred.

The candidate should possess a minimum of five years of experience working with first-generation, low-income, and underserved populations in a higher education context.

Furthermore, at least two years of experience serving at-risk and/or stop-out student populations is required. A high level of proficiency in interpreting data analytics is essential. Familiarity with or willingness to learn Microsoft Office, Jenzabar, and related Enterprise Resource Programs (ERPs) is necessary. Experience in translating passion and commitment for student success into measurable outcomes that enhance the overall college experience is crucial.

Knowledge of best practices for student retention and prior experience with at-risk and stop-out student populations is required.

The ability to provide guidance and support, establish trusting relationships, work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting, maintain confidentiality, and be sensitive to the needs of diverse populations is essential. The candidate must thrive in a fast-paced environment, respond effectively under pressure, and adapt to change.

Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, manage and prioritize multiple assignments, and exercise sound judgment is required. Exceptional skills in listening, organization, problem-solving, decision-making, creativity, oral and written communication, and interpersonal relations are necessary.

The candidate must be capable of developing and maintaining databases and reports, analyzing data, and utilizing appropriate technologies to diversify methods of student support.

An understanding of student development theory and current methodologies for student retention is a plus. A strong commitment to serving and assisting students in achieving academic success is essential.
