Key Responsibilities


The Student Retention Support Specialist reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Student Development and plays a crucial role in assisting students who may be at risk of not completing their degrees.

This position involves the coordination and execution of initiatives aimed at preventing student drop-out rates, alongside providing essential support services and implementing immediate intervention strategies for identified students. The specialist will gather, analyze, and utilize data from intervention systems to formulate strategies and interventions focused on retention; develop data-informed approaches to enhance problem-solving, self-advocacy, academic resilience, persistence, and positive behaviors within the campus community; research exemplary programs for student retention; organize intervention activities such as learning communities and orientations, and collaborate with re-engagement coaches; manage resources and systems related to student retention; coordinate scholarship and need-based grant opportunities with financial aid representatives; maintain accurate records and documentation for each student, assess data including academic performance, track student progress, provide outreach and early interventions, and refer students for personal, educational, and career counseling.

The specialist will review academic records and other relevant documents to determine the best strategies for expediting degree completion and student success.

They will assist students in navigating their academic journeys by providing academic support, innovative problem-solving, and timely connections to both academic and non-academic resources.

The Student Retention Support Specialist will engage with students through various communication methods, including face-to-face interactions, phone calls, emails, and virtual meetings, to maintain contact and build rapport.

This role also includes coordinating and supporting other aspects of the project, working closely with key campus offices to connect students with resources available both on campus and in the community.

Compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and adherence to university policies and procedures is mandatory.

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary within the scope of the position.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
A Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field such as Education, Psychology, Business, Social Work, or Counseling is preferred.

The candidate must possess a minimum of five years of experience working with first-generation, low-income, and underserved populations in a higher education context.

Additionally, at least two years of experience in supporting at-risk and/or stop-out student populations is required. A strong ability to interpret data analytics is essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Jenzabar, and related Enterprise Resource Programs (ERPs) is necessary. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to student success, translating passion into measurable outcomes that enhance the overall college experience.

Knowledge of best practices for student retention and prior experience with at-risk and stop-out student populations is crucial.

The ability to provide guidance, build trusting relationships, work independently and collaboratively, maintain confidentiality, and respond sensitively to diverse populations is required. The candidate must thrive in a fast-paced environment, handle pressure well, and adapt to change.

Demonstrated skills in meeting deadlines, managing multiple assignments, and exercising sound judgment are essential. Exceptional listening, organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, creativity, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills are required.

The ability to develop and maintain databases and reports, analyze data, and utilize appropriate technologies to diversify student support delivery methods is necessary.

Familiarity with student development theories and current methodologies for student retention is a plus. A strong commitment to serving and assisting students in achieving academic success is essential.
