The Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a Supplier Governance Process & Standards Specialist to take on a full-time, permanent position.

This role will assist the Supplier Governance Process & Standards Manager in shaping the supplier engagement and performance standards, along with the processes that position National Grid as a preferred partner for our suppliers.

As we lead the transition to a Net Zero future in the UK and Northeast USA, we acknowledge that decarbonizing our energy systems will require addressing numerous challenges and forming new partnerships, adopting innovative technologies, and making transformative investments. Over the next five years, we plan to invest significantly in our operations, nearly doubling our previous investment levels. This is a pivotal moment for our industry, presenting substantial opportunities for National Grid; it marks the beginning of a transformative era that will influence our success for many years ahead.

In light of these developments, our supply chains are encountering unprecedented challenges and are integral to our strategic plans, placing National Grid Procurement at the forefront of our Net Zero objectives. We have outlined an ambitious transformation strategy focused on becoming the preferred partner for our suppliers while ensuring exceptional outcomes for our Business Units (BUs). Our approach centers on significant advancements in three primary areas:
  • Collaboration: We are strengthening our relationships with our supply chain, aligning more closely with each National Grid Group Business Unit (BU).
  • Scale: We are leveraging the vast scale of our organization to unlock greater potential. By harnessing our collective capabilities, we can achieve remarkable results.
  • Operational Enhancement: We are transforming our operational methodologies. By embracing innovative approaches and technologies, we are streamlining processes to simplify and enhance daily operations.

  • Oversee the delivery and continuous improvement of a robust supplier segmentation strategy (e.g., based on expenditure, criticality), ensuring our approach adapts to evolving supplier dynamics.
  • Establish standards and processes for supplier engagement across all levels of National Grid's supply chain, collaborating with Strategic Supplier Engagement (SSE), Supply Chain Risk and Performance, and Market Supplier Development teams.
  • Assist in formulating comprehensive supplier strategies for key suppliers, incorporating insights from various teams (e.g., Sustainability, Supply Chain Risk) and aligning with business objectives.
  • Enhance and deliver training on the defined supplier standards process across the broader Procurement function.
  • Collaborate with the procurement digital team to identify, develop, and implement technologies that drive continuous improvement in this domain.
  • Support 'Voice of the Supplier' surveys, generating insights to inform action plans aimed at enhancing National Grid's market perception and establishing us as a preferred partner.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of an effective supplier governance plan and reporting framework, ensuring appropriate controls and KPIs are applied to supplier performance, risks, costs, and relationships by category team.
Qualifications
  • Exceptional stakeholder and supplier management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels, both within National Grid and externally with supplier executives and senior leaders.
  • Understanding of commercial models and techniques essential for achieving best-in-class supplier engagement to facilitate improvements across multiple suppliers.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills with a solid grasp of contract law and experience in managing procurement activities to deliver value.
  • Proficient in analyzing KPIs and contract data, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to assist category teams in mitigating commercial risks and managing contract performance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of National Grid's broader business objectives and their implications for category management across regional and group operations.
