All positions with Santa Fe Public Schools require a post offer/pre-employment background check. Some positions have additional requirements as established by Federal or State Rules and Regulations.

General Function:
Supports the licensed registered school nurse in executing the school health program by delivering assigned nursing services in the health office and/or performing designated nursing tasks for individual students with special needs.

Education/Training/Experience:
Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent. Valid standard American Red Cross first aid certification and current CPR certification (can be obtained on the job). Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
Preferred: Certified Nurse Aide. Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:
Proficient in clerical tasks, including computer usage, typing, and office procedures. Ability to conduct hearing and vision screenings (training available on the job). Basic first aid and CPR knowledge. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA/FERPA policies. Strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal, with diverse populations, including students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors. Competency in delegated nursing tasks such as tube feeding, diapering, range of motion exercises, feeding assistance, and catheterization (training may be provided). Ability to maintain student health records, gather data, and report it to the licensed registered school nurse. Capability to keep equipment and the health office organized and clean.

Essential Job Functions:
All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety, and environmental regulations. Current essential functions include:
  1. Collect and report data regarding students' health status under the direction of the licensed registered nurse.
    1. Assist with routine vision, hearing, height, and weight screenings;
    2. Monitor students according to individualized health care plans;
    3. Communicate relevant information/observations to the licensed registered nurse.
  2. Implement aspects of the nursing care plan, consistent with training and verified competency, under the supervision of the licensed registered nurse.
  3. Perform student-specific delegated nursing procedures and treatments as per the individualized health plan.
  4. Assist with the self-administration of medications by students in accordance with school district medication policies.
  5. Support the implementation of policies and procedures for controlling communicable diseases in schools.
  6. Provide basic first aid and CPR as necessary.
  7. Help maintain student health records, including immunization documentation, and share relevant information with the licensed registered nurse.
  8. Uphold confidentiality in compliance with state and federal laws and district policies.
  9. Share responsibility for the care of district inventory and the safe use of facilities, equipment, and supplies, promptly reporting safety hazards.
  10. Maintain a clean, organized, and orderly health room environment.
  11. Exhibit effective interpersonal and communication skills with diverse populations, including students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors.
  12. Demonstrate a commitment to working with students and treating them as individuals.
  13. Serve as a positive role model for students, families, and staff.
  14. Maintain competency through ongoing training and educational activities.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.
Salary Range:
Based on education and experience
$26,000+ based on years of verified experience

Resources Used in Performing Job Include:
New Mexico School Health Manual (Dept. of Health), Quality Nursing Interventions in the School Setting: Procedures, Models and Guidelines (NASN, Hootman), computer, audiometer, sphygmomanometer, otoscope, electronic thermometer, wheelchair, and other medical equipment required by the individual student's healthcare plan.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:
Regularly lift and move up to 25 pounds in supplies, requiring bending, stooping, and lifting. Physical strength and ability to assist injured students and staff in emergencies by positioning or moving, following established procedures. Use hands and arms to manipulate equipment, tools, keyboards, or other objects. Sit and stand for extended periods. Regular exposure to disease and injury.

Environmental Conditions:
Most work is performed indoors at a school site, with possible travel to other campus locations to assist in emergencies.
