Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Family Services Specialist I to join our team. As a key member of our social services department, you will be responsible for providing critical support to vulnerable populations, including children, adults, and families in need.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret and apply laws, policies, and regulations related to social services.
  • Monitor, coordinate, and administer various programs and services.
  • Coordinate services and provide case management to ensure effective delivery of support.
  • Interview and assess client needs, providing counseling and referrals as necessary.
  • Present cases to determine appropriate services and develop service plans.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and support to ensure compliance and successful outcomes.
  • Manage program waiting lists and track expenditures.
  • Prepare and submit budget estimates and ensure timely payment for services.
  • Complete necessary planning and reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with other agencies and participate in multi-disciplinary teams to provide comprehensive services.
  • Conduct regular monitoring of programs and services.
  • Serve as a resource to clients and the community in areas of expertise.
  • Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field or related field with a minimum of two years of experience in a human services area.
  • Knowledge of social work principles, human behavior, and social, economic, and health problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong typing and data entry skills, with ability to follow 24-hour case documentation requirements.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience writing court documents, such as court reports and emergency removal and protective order affidavits.
  • Experience interviewing individuals and producing written documents.
  • Willingness to work emergency duty shifts as assigned.
  • Current experience working for the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS).
  • Experience or knowledge of OASIS and/or Peer Place.
  • Strong typing and data entry skills, with ability to follow 24-hour case documentation requirements.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
Special Requirements

Emergency duty participation is required to comply with mandated responsibilities. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term departmental needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
