Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Family Services Specialist I to join our team. As a key member of our social services department, you will be responsible for providing critical support to vulnerable populations, including children, adults, and families in need.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret and apply laws, policies, and regulations related to social services.
  • Monitor, coordinate, and administer programs to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Coordinate services with other agencies and stakeholders to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Interview and assess client needs, providing personalized support and guidance.
  • Develop and implement service plans to address client needs and goals.
  • Provide case management services to monitor client progress and ensure compliance.
  • Manage program waiting lists and track expenditures to ensure efficient resource allocation.
  • Prepare and submit budget estimates and ensure timely payment for services.
  • Complete necessary planning and reporting requirements to meet regulatory standards.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams to provide comprehensive services to clients.
  • Conduct ongoing monitoring of programs to ensure quality and effectiveness.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field or related field with a minimum of two years of experience in a human services area.
  • Knowledge of social work principles, human behavior, and social problems.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to customer service.
  • Proficiency in operating a motor vehicle and personal computer with associated software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience writing court documents and producing written reports.
  • Experience interviewing clients and producing detailed written summaries.
  • Willingness to work emergency duty shifts and respond to critical situations.
  • Experience working in child welfare or a related field.
  • Knowledge of OASIS and/or Peer Place systems.
  • Strong typing and data entry skills, with the ability to follow 24-hour case documentation requirements.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality services.
Special Requirements

Emergency duty participation is required to comply with mandated responsibilities. Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term departmental needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

This position is deemed safety-sensitive, and applicants are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse an applicant from the testing process or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
