Welding Operations Manager

Objective:

Colonna's Shipyard is in search of a Welding Operations Manager to oversee our Plate/Weld Shop, ensuring seamless operations within our shipyard environment.

Role Overview:

This position requires a comprehensive understanding of project specifications and the necessary requirements for effective trades support, guaranteeing safe and efficient production in ship repair and industrial fabrication activities. The role involves supervising a skilled trades workforce and ensuring adherence to overall schedule, budget, quality, and safety objectives for assigned tasks.

The position is based onsite and may require flexible hours beyond the standard work week to accommodate production needs. Limited travel may also be necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

- Facilitate labor requirements for job completion, ensuring clear communication of specifications, blueprints, and job orders to work teams.
- Maintain optimal personnel levels, production space, tooling, and equipment assets while establishing efficient work processes to meet production timelines.
- Propose enhancements in working conditions and equipment usage to boost shop efficiency.
- Analyze and resolve production issues to minimize disruptions to schedules.

Specific Duties Include:
  • Overseeing shop resources by allocating trades personnel to Foremen based on project demands.
  • Assisting trades foremen in supervising, assigning, coordinating, training, and evaluating skilled and semi-skilled trades personnel according to their expertise and experience.
  • Managing the lifecycle of shop personnel, including hiring, retention, coaching, and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Engaging in workforce development by identifying candidates for mentorship opportunities and supporting succession planning.
  • Breaking down large projects into actionable plans, ensuring adequate shop resources, and executing daily production goals safely and efficiently.
  • Finalizing and presenting all project deliverables, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Ensuring adherence to technical job specifications, including managing test and inspection plans for assigned areas.
  • Overseeing manufacturing, installation, operation, testing, and processes that significantly impact the company's financial performance.
Additionally, the role will:
  • Provide feedback for current budgets through hours management and report scheduling and progress updates.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or Registered Apprentice with at least 2 years of relevant trades experience (or high school diploma with 6 years of trades experience) and 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of design principles, ASME/AWS codes, and safety standards, along with hands-on experience in welding methods and quality controls.
  • Experience supporting QA/QC programs and procedures.
  • Familiarity with standard ship repair and industrial fabrication tools and equipment.
  • Ability to interpret job specifications, drawings, and technical references.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with employees and leadership.
  • Reliable attendance and availability to work various shifts.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience supporting multiple trades is highly desirable.
  • Four years of overall supervisory experience in the relevant trade is preferred.
Security and Travel Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Minimal travel, approximately 10% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Able to lift and transport heavy equipment and materials, with a minimum weight of 20 lbs.
  • Physically agile to perform tasks in naval environments, including climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.
  • May require working aboard ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and conditions, including areas with limited ventilation.
  • Frequent exposure to noise from machinery and equipment.
  • Must operate trucks, forklifts, and man-lifts as required.
