Position Overview:
The Microfluidics and System Technology division at Hewlett-Packard Labs is in search of a highly skilled mechanical engineer to enhance its prestigious R&D team focused on pioneering advancements in microfluidics and life sciences.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of experts, including physicists, mechanical engineers, material scientists, chemists, and software engineers, to drive impactful research and applied science that influences HP's product offerings.
  • Design and develop microfluidic devices and cartridges, as well as innovative molecular diagnostic systems.
  • Fabricate and evaluate intricate platforms and tools, ensuring optimal performance through rigorous testing.
  • Plan and execute experiments aimed at validating, diagnosing, and enhancing system performance or exploring alternative subsystem designs.

Additional Duties:
  • Engage in innovative problem-solving across various technical domains, addressing challenges related to materials properties, chemistry, physics, thermal design, fluid dynamics, and control systems.
  • Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation tools, such as COMSOL, to support engineering efforts.

Qualifications:

This role requires a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, along with:

  • Exceptional hands-on skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a relevant R&D environment.
  • A self-driven approach with strong communication abilities and effective collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with molecular biology or chemical engineering is advantageous.
  • Experience in fluid dynamics, microfluidics, or thermal design is a plus.
  • Knowledge of firmware and software, as well as control systems, is beneficial.
  • A solid understanding of fundamental physics is preferred.
  • Proven ability to innovate and design within a multidisciplinary framework.
  • Experience in defining and executing groundbreaking research experiments to facilitate engineering advancements.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping and fabrication techniques, including mills, lathes, laser cutters, and 3D printing.

Compensation is competitive and reflects the cost of labor across various U.S. markets, with base pay typically ranging from $117,000 to $160,000 annually, along with potential bonuses and equity opportunities.
