Position Overview:
The Microfluidics and System Technology division at HP Laboratories is in search of a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to contribute to pioneering research in the microfluidics and life sciences sectors.

Key Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will collaborate with a diverse team of experts, including physicists, mechanical engineers, material scientists, chemists, and software engineers, to drive impactful research that influences HP's products and business strategies.

The role encompasses:

  • Designing and constructing microfluidic devices and cartridges.
  • Developing innovative molecular diagnostic systems.
  • Fabricating and evaluating complex platforms and tools.
  • Planning and executing experiments to validate and enhance performance or explore alternative subsystem designs.

Technical Areas of Focus:
The engineer will engage in a variety of technical domains to address multidisciplinary challenges, including:

  • Materials properties
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Thermal design
  • Fluid dynamics
  • Control systems

Qualifications:
This position requires a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of five years of experience in a research and development environment. Candidates should possess:

  • Exceptional hands-on skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • A self-motivated approach with effective communication abilities.
  • Experience in molecular biology or chemical engineering is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with fluid dynamics, microfluidics, or thermal design is a plus.
  • Knowledge of firmware and software, as well as control systems, is beneficial.
  • A solid understanding of fundamental physics.
  • Proven ability to innovate and design in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Experience with prototyping and fabrication techniques, including mills, lathes, laser cutters, and 3D printing.

Compensation and Benefits:

The typical salary range for this role across the U.S. is between $117,000 and $160,000 annually, with additional opportunities for bonuses and equity based on experience and location.
