Position:
Ambulatory Patient Care Assistant
Department: Cancer Center
Location: Penn Medicine Valley Forge
Hours: Full Time

Role Summary:
The Ambulatory Patient Care Assistant (APCA) supports the practice manager and physicians in fostering a patient-centered environment, enhancing the delivery of high-quality care, and contributing to patient satisfaction and operational goals.

The APCA is responsible for providing patient care through tasks such as patient preparation, interviewing, technical duties, assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), and effective communication with patients and families.

Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care Duties:

- Efficiently rooms patients, utilizing electronic medical records (EMR) to notify providers of patient readiness.
- Reviews medical histories, including surgical, family, and medication details; documents necessary corrections in EMR.
- Initiates self-management goal setting when appropriate and records vital signs in EMR.
- Prepares charts for patient visits and understands insurance requirements for lab work and referrals.

- Monitors patient conditions and promptly communicates any abnormal findings to the provider.
- Assists patients with ADLs, including mobility, dressing, and preparation for examinations.


Specimen Management:

- Collects specimens for testing as required, including performing phlebotomy and nasal swab collections.
- Conducts laboratory tests, records results in EMR, and reconciles findings with logs as necessary.
- Performs EKGs and other outpatient tests as ordered, ensuring accurate documentation of results.

- Aids in minor surgical procedures by managing instruments and maintaining a sterile environment.

- Responds effectively to emergency situations.


Administrative Duties:

- Engages in proactive telephonic patient care, coordinating with specialists and other health services.
- Obtains and scans necessary documents for patient visits, including test results and referrals.
- Completes medical forms and prepares patient correspondence as needed.


Safety and Compliance:

- Adheres to infection control policies and proper waste disposal protocols.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization in patient care areas, ensuring they are well-stocked and prepared.

- Cleans and sterilizes instruments according to established protocols and checks equipment functionality.

- Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory standards and adapts to new processes as required.


Qualifications:

- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification (Required)
- Certified Nurse Aide certification (Required)
- High School Diploma or GED (Required)
- Nursing students in accredited BSN programs may be considered under specific conditions.
