The City of Durham is seeking a dedicated Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to join our innovative Involuntary Commitment (IVC) Response Unit. This specialized role is essential in providing compassionate care and immediate assessments for individuals in crisis.

About the Role:

The IVC Response Unit EMT will work alongside a licensed clinician to conduct in-field evaluations for individuals experiencing mental health crises. This pioneering initiative aims to assess individuals on-site, ensuring that unnecessary hospital transports are avoided whenever possible.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Assist the Licensed Clinician in performing in-field first examinations for involuntary commitments.
  2. Provide medical screenings and transport individuals to appropriate facilities as needed.
  3. Respond to 911 calls involving mental health and behavioral health crises using trauma-informed intervention strategies.
  4. Collaborate with team members to build trusting relationships and ensure effective crisis response.
  5. Maintain medical equipment and ensure compliance with documentation standards.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED, along with certification as an Advanced EMT from the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services. A valid North Carolina driver's license is required, and candidates should be prepared to engage in ongoing training and professional development.
