Role Summary: The Visitor Engagement Specialist is tasked with executing essential operational functions that enhance guest interaction by delivering exceptional programming to all visitors. This role involves presenting scientific exhibit content in an educational, inspiring, and enjoyable manner, creating personalized and memorable experiences throughout the museum.

This is a part-time position requiring onsite presence 3-4 full days each week, including weekends and occasional evenings for special events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Employ a blend of scientific knowledge, educational techniques, and effective public speaking to engage and motivate guests within the museum's exhibits.
  • Encourage guest participation in programming, ensuring a personalized and guest-centered experience.
  • Facilitate discussions with visitors using a conversational educational style and open-ended questions to convey scientific concepts and achieve program objectives.
  • Tailor guest interactions to accommodate diverse audiences of varying ages, backgrounds, and knowledge levels.
  • Utilize established program goals and outlines, alongside independent or group research, to deliver inspiring sessions.
  • Anticipate and address guest inquiries and concerns proactively.
  • Engage in team discussions and meetings to continuously refine skills and enhance programming.
  • Perform essential operational tasks related to exhibits, including wayfinding, guest check-in, and museum opening/closing procedures.
  • Support colleagues with a positive, professional demeanor and collaborative spirit.
  • Anticipate team needs and work together to find solutions.
  • Actively participate in ongoing coaching and development for oneself, the team, and programs to meet facilitation and program goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • One to two years of relevant experience in program facilitation, customer service, or public speaking.
  • Higher education is advantageous.
  • A strong enthusiasm for science and education is essential.
  • Availability to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings is required.
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and readiness to assist guests.
  • Exceptional self-awareness and self-regulation skills.
  • A commitment to continuous growth and improvement.
  • Strong customer service, problem-solving, and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Excellent public speaking, multitasking, and conversational skills.
  • Capability to engage guests for extended periods, both individually and in groups, while addressing inquiries as needed.
  • A positive attitude, adaptability, and resilience are crucial; a passion for working with people in a lively environment is a must.
  • Strong teamwork and listening skills; ability to foster collaboration.
  • Adaptability to various learning and communication styles.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks such as walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, lifting, and engaging in physical activities.
  • Proficient computer skills; comfortable learning and using new software and hardware to support guest needs.
  • Language skills: Ability to read and interpret documents, and communicate effectively in group settings.
  • Mathematical skills: Ability to perform basic calculations.
  • Reasoning skills: Ability to solve practical problems and interpret various instructions.
  • Physical requirements: Regular use of hands, standing, walking, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Work environment: Exposure to various conditions, including wet or humid environments, and participation in science demonstrations.
