Job Summary

The Lead Designated Campus Fire Marshal is a critical role that operates with broad and independent authority, responsible for ensuring the fire and life safety of the entire UCSF community. This position directs the EH&S Fire Prevention Team, which has jurisdiction over the entire UCSF enterprise, including both Campus and Health facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements fire and life safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Conducts plan review and construction inspections of new and renovated structures to ensure fire safety compliance.
  • Provides direction and supervision to subordinate staff, ensuring effective implementation of roles and responsibilities.
  • Manages budgets and expenses, ensuring compliance with budgetary allocations.
  • Evaluates and recommends policies and procedures to ensure awareness of and compliance with UCSF and government regulatory requirements.
  • Monitors and prevents hazards related to fire, explosion, panic, and crowd management.
  • Reviews and incorporates fire safety standards promulgated by regulatory authorities.
  • Directs audits, follow-up, and notification activities.
  • Provides reports to Federal, State, and local agencies.
  • Develops and implements communication programs to enhance awareness of and compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, policies, etc.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in fire service administration, fire protection administration and technology, engineering, chemistry, physics, architecture, or related field.
  • Four years of recent experience performing full-time plan review, fire prevention inspections, and/or technical inspection of supervision of general construction projects for fire and life safety compliance in a California local or state entity responsible for fire and building code and regulation enforcement.
  • Experience in managing and approving fire, life, and panic safety provisions for large special events.
  • Designation as Lead Designated Campus Fire Marshal by the Office of the State Fire Marshal (or must be able to attain this designation within 6 months of hire as a condition of continued employment).
  • Valid Driver License.
  • Expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including the California Health & Safety Code - Titles 19 and 24, California Building Code, California Fire Code, California Mechanical Code, California Electrical Code, California Plumbing Code, and NFPA standards in the areas of fire protection, life safety, and panic safety.
