Role Overview: The Senior Control Systems Engineer is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting the Honeywell Distributed Control System (DCS). This role provides essential support for operational activities by collaborating with control board operators and instrumentation maintenance teams. The engineer will oversee the alarm management program to ensure safe and efficient plant operations while developing and maintaining comprehensive documentation related to control schemes and systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Troubleshoot and uphold the DCS (Honeywell TDC 3000 & Experion), focusing on control schemes, graphics, and tags.
  • Deliver daily control systems support to designated operational units.
  • Collaborate with operations and process engineering teams.
  • Design and implement process control strategies and techniques.
  • Analyze and resolve controller performance challenges, including PID loop tuning.
  • Conduct alarm reviews with operations to assist in the corporate alarm rationalization initiative.
  • Support project engineers with funding, execution, and development of control schemes.
  • Maintain and enhance the advanced process control program, communicating performance metrics to process engineering and operations.
  • Develop and sustain control-related documentation.
  • Work alongside instrumentation maintenance personnel to troubleshoot plant issues.
  • Effectively present information and respond to inquiries from operations, maintenance staff, and management.
  • Address practical problems in situations with limited standardized solutions.
  • Actively contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Provide support for occasional weekend callouts and turnaround coverage.

  • Ability to complete tasks within specified timelines, including urgent and long-term deadlines.
  • Willingness to cross-train in other departmental responsibilities to ensure efficient coverage.
  • Ability to collaborate with others to tackle challenging assignments.
  • Skill in multitasking and prioritizing multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word and Excel).
This position is classified as salaried exempt, meaning overtime pay is not applicable.

The compensation range for this role is $127,000 to $175,000, reflecting Valero's good faith estimate of expected remuneration at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be determined based on various job-related factors, including individual qualifications and experience.

Qualifications:
  • Must be able and willing to work on-site.
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in a petroleum refinery is required.
  • Process engineering experience is preferred.
  • Experience in process control and/or control systems engineering is required, with at least 2 years of DCS control experience preferred.
Position level and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
