Senior Control Systems Engineer

Position Summary:
The Senior Control Systems Engineer is responsible for the maintenance and troubleshooting of the Honeywell Distributed Control System (DCS). This role provides essential support for operational activities by collaborating with control board operators and instrumentation maintenance teams. The engineer will also oversee the alarm management program to ensure safe and efficient plant operations. Furthermore, this position involves the development and upkeep of precise documentation regarding control strategies and programs.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Diagnose and maintain DCS (Honeywell TDC 3000 & Experion), focusing on control strategies, graphics, and tagging.
2. Offer daily support for control systems to designated operational units.
3. Collaborate with operations and process engineering teams.
4. Design and implement process control strategies and techniques.
5. Analyze and resolve controller performance challenges, including PID loop tuning.
6. Conduct alarm reviews with operations to facilitate corporate alarm rationalization initiatives.
7. Assist project engineers with funding, execution, and development of control strategies.
8. Maintain and support the advanced process control program, communicating performance metrics to process engineering and operations.
9. Develop and sustain control-related documentation.
10. Work alongside instrumentation maintenance personnel to troubleshoot operational issues.
11. Present information effectively and respond to inquiries from operations, maintenance teams, and management.
12. Address practical problems in situations with limited standardized solutions.
13. Actively engage in maintaining a safe working environment.
14. Provide support for occasional weekend callouts and turnaround coverage.
Qualifications:
- Must be willing to work on-site.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is required.
- A minimum of 5 years of engineering experience in a petroleum refinery is required.
- Experience in process engineering is preferred.
- Required experience in process control and/or control systems engineering, with at least 2 years in DCS control.
- This position is salaried exempt, meaning it is not eligible for overtime pay.
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is competitive and reflects Valero's good faith estimate of expected compensation. Actual compensation will be determined based on various job-related factors, including the candidate's qualifications and experience.
