CLAIMS INVESTIGATOR - CLAIMS DIVISION

The City of Atlanta Department of Law is in search of skilled candidates for the position of Claims Investigator within the Claims Division, which oversees claims lodged against the City of Atlanta.

Position Overview and Classification Standards

The individual selected for this role will be tasked with delivering investigative legal services for the City of Atlanta. Responsibilities encompass the collection of information, evidence, and other discovery materials pertinent to ongoing investigations; conducting witness interviews; executing on-site evaluations; performing legal research; and making recommendations regarding the settlement or denial of claims for active cases. This role requires an experienced professional capable of independently managing most assignments typical of the investigative field.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are representative of this position and should not be interpreted as exhaustive or exclusive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary:

  • Formulates and implements investigative strategies to collect information (e.g., witnesses, electronic data, physical evidence) to evaluate the legitimacy of a claim.
  • Engages and collaborates with individuals, insurance providers, legal representatives, governmental bodies, and inter-departmental teams to prioritize, manage, and investigate claims to validate or refute them. Conducts site visits as required.
  • Identifies and arranges interviews with witnesses (employees, medical experts, and other relevant individuals).
  • Utilizes analytical and investigative methodologies, including logical reasoning and critical thinking skills.
  • Responds promptly to claims-related inquiries via calls, letters, texts, and emails, while consistently updating claimants and other relevant parties.
  • Maintains organized case files utilizing case management software.
  • Oversees workload to ensure timely and efficient claim resolution while minimizing liability for the City of Atlanta.
  • Establishes rapport with key members of the Law Department Practice Groups, other departments, boards, and agencies within the City of Atlanta.
  • Drafts written summaries of claim investigations and prepares preliminary settlement documents with recommendations for claim disposition for approval by the Claims Manager or Supervisory Attorney.
  • Delivers presentations on case studies to team members, highlighting issues and challenges faced while providing best practices for determining appropriate resolutions.
  • Employs a variety of resource tools to support investigations, including state and local codes, legal research platforms, and specialized investigative tools.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in operating the Department of Law's Document Management System.
