Chief Development Officer

Common Justice is seeking a seasoned Chief Development Officer to lead our development and fundraising efforts. This role will join a highly dedicated and passionate team committed to advancing transformative solutions to violence and fostering racial equity without relying on incarceration.

Key Responsibilities
  • Fundraising Strategy and Leadership
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to achieve a $10M revenue target for FY26.
    • Lead fundraising efforts, including grassroots campaigns and cross-departmental collaboration with Programs and Finance.
    • Work closely with the Executive Director, COO, and Board of Directors to maintain accurate revenue projections and refine strategies.
    • Regularly review and realign fundraising policies, including gift acceptance and overall fundraising culture.
  • Fundraising Operations and Donor Relations
    • Cultivate and manage relationships with current and prospective funders, stewarding a portfolio of donors alongside the Executive Director and Major Gifts Officer.
    • Develop and implement strategies to grow Common Justice's individual donor base, collaborating with the Donor Organizer and Communications team.
    • Expand the corporate giving program by exploring partnerships with current prospects and identifying new opportunities.
    • Support the Finance and Operations team in exploring new partnerships, advising on RFPs, and providing input on contract systems and quarterly vouchers.
    • Plan and manage donor stewardship and fundraising events in partnership with Communications.
  • Team Development and Coaching
    • Provide intensive support, mentorship, and strategic guidance to the Development team, ensuring their professional growth and effectiveness.
    • Provide performance evaluations, check-ins, and team collaboration opportunities for the Development team that motivates and empowers team members to achieve their full potential.
    • Oversee all fundraising and grant systems, processes, and other tools to ensure efficient and timely use by all team members.
The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to Common Justice's mission, core values, and commitment to social justice, as well as knowledge about structural inequities and how they impact fundraising. They will also bring the following skills, attributes, and experiences:

  • 10+ years of experience in fundraising, especially in major donor cultivation and direct solicitation.
  • Experience with community-centric fundraising approaches.
  • 7+ years of experience in managing development teams.
  • Desire to build and develop a newly expanded fundraising team.
  • Experience using donor management systems to track the team's progress and make strategic decisions.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and trust across diverse life experiences and backgrounds.
  • Strong understanding of and respect for boundaries with the ability to cultivate a balanced work environment within the team and with donors.
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail.
The Benefits

The CDO will receive a competitive salary ranging from $156,000 to $162,000, based on our pay scale survey. To ensure equity, the salary offer will be non-negotiable. Common Justice also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including robust health coverage, a 401(k) plan with employer contributions, ample paid time off, and a sabbatical program for long-term employees.
