Under the guidance of the Program Manager, the Substance Abuse Counseling Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the activities of Counselors and Interns. This role ensures that the treatment program delivers high-quality clinical services. The Supervisor will monitor the development of the program at the facility and maintain the current level of service offerings. This position is accountable for the professional growth and training of the staff under supervision. It includes direct care responsibilities such as assessments, group sessions, education, and case management. In certain circumstances, this role may involve a combination of LADC duties and supervisory responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight to counseling staff and assist with the case management of clients enrolled in the program.
  • Conduct screenings and interviews to determine client eligibility for program admission.
  • Exhibit proficiency in the competencies required for alcohol and drug counseling.
  • Facilitate ongoing education and training for all team members.
  • Review and approve all progress notes, treatment plans, transfers, and termination documents for ADC Trainees and interns.
  • Lead weekly supervision meetings.
  • Participate in monthly management meetings and stay updated on all licensure requirements.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and daily reports.
Qualifications Required for Essential Job Functions:
  • Must possess current Minnesota State Licensure as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in providing individual and group counseling for individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Thorough understanding of all regulations and requirements of the assigned program.
  • A minimum of two years of sobriety from chemical abuse issues.
  • Must document 12 hours of training in co-occurring mental health and substance abuse issues, covering areas such as screening, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, documentation, programming, medication management, collaboration, mental health consultation, and discharge planning.
  • Ongoing training in cultural awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultural norms and values.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required.
  • Proficient in computer usage.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts in an understandable manner.
  • Ability to engage with individuals from various cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Adaptability to manage changing priorities effectively.
  • Competent in drafting emails, memos, and reports.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex concepts.
  • Ability to connect with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Flexibility to accommodate various shifting priorities.
Physical Requirements
  • Extended periods of sitting, approximately 80% of the time.
  • Occasional lifting and reaching for client files, up to 5 lbs., about 10% of the time.
  • Heavy data entry on a computer, around 25% of the time.
  • Frequent handling of paperwork and writing tasks.
