Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Human Factors Engineer / Principal Human Factors Engineer to join our diverse and skilled team.

This role is based in Melbourne, Florida. The Human Systems Integration team is in search of a Human Factors Engineer (HFE) to become part of Northrop Grumman.

In this role, the new team member will contribute to ensuring that the evolving aircraft hardware and software systems are operable by U.S. military flight and maintenance crews.

This position necessitates a robust background in Systems Engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate requirements in accordance with Human Factors best practices and relevant sections of MIL-STD-1472.
  • Contribute to Human Factors Analyses, including Task Analyses, Predictive Workload Analyses, Usability studies, and Workload and Situational Awareness surveys.
  • Conduct computer-based (NX) and empirical accessibility assessments from both operator and maintainer perspectives.
  • Author and support program documentation of the HFE processes and products in alignment with U.S. Military Data Item Descriptions (e.g., Human Engineering Program Plan, Human Engineering Design Approach Document – Operator, Human Engineering Design Approach Document – Maintainer, Human Engineering Test Plan, Human Engineering Test Report, etc.).
  • Collaborate with Design Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to ensure that evolving designs meet program requirements and comply with Human Interface design standards.
  • Assist in Airworthiness analysis, artifact development, and compliance summaries. This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below. This position is contingent upon verification of active DoD Secret clearance and the ability to obtain Special Access Program clearance.

Basic Qualifications:

Human Factors Engineer:
Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience in a Human Factors related field OR a Master's degree.
Principal
Human Factors Engineer:

Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience in a Human Factors related field, or a Master's degree and 3 years of experience in a related field; or a PhD in a related field.


  • Must possess an active DoD Secret (or higher) clearance (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled in Continuous Evaluation).
  • Must have the capability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active, In-Scope TOP SECRET DoD security clearance with the ability to obtain Program Access.
  • Experience in developing, administering, and/or analyzing Human Factors questionnaires such as Usability, Workload, and Situational Awareness.
  • Proficiency in writing and executing demonstration and test procedures.
  • Ability to clearly and accurately communicate engineering findings in both oral and written technical reports and presentations.
  • Familiarity with the interpretation and application of systems safety, personnel survivability, and habitability requirements in system design.
  • Experience with CAD Tools (NX and NX Jack Expertise preferred).
  • Experience in system engineering processes and tools (DOORS preferred).
  • Experience with system modeling tools (i.e., CORE, Rhapsody, PTC Integrity Modeler, Cameo).
  • Understanding of systems and design thinking, as well as HMI/HCI design principles and practices.
  • Experience authoring Human Interface Design CDRLs in accordance with DoD Data Item Descriptions (e.g., HEDAD-M/O, HEPP, HSIPP, HETP/R, etc.).
  • Experience interpreting, applying, and/or tailoring MIL-STD-1472, MIL-STD-411, MIL-STD-1787, MIL-STD-3009, and/or MIL-STD-46855 in support of aircraft design activities.

Salary Range:
$75,300 - $112,900. Salary Range 2: $92,600 - $139,000. The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers various factors when determining base salary offers, such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills, and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions and allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
