Job Title: Benefit Programs Specialist I/II

Hiring Range: $32,415 to Commensurate with experience

Full Time or Part Time: Full Time

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Benefit Programs Specialist I/II to join our team. As a Benefit Programs Specialist, you will play a critical role in determining eligibility for various social services and government assistance programs. About the Role:

This is an opportunity to work in a county that appreciates its employees and values excellent service to its residents. As a Benefit Programs Specialist, you will work independently and collaboratively with a team to determine eligibility for financial assistance, food stamps, medical assistance, and other social services benefit programs. You will also be responsible for conducting interviews, explaining program availability, and evaluating social factors influencing eligibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct interviews to determine eligibility for assistance and re-determine continuing eligibility;
  • Explain the nature of temporary assistance benefit programs and determine reasons and need for assistance;
  • Process applications for financial assistance and diversion, and explain client responsibilities, rights, and program availability;
  • Evaluate consistency and completeness of data secured, and where indicated, substantiate its accuracy;
  • Compute assistance plans;
  • Determine the need for and amount of allowances for special circumstance items;
  • Evaluate social factors such as education, work experience, and levels of social functioning;
  • Evaluate employability of clients and explore potential sources of income.

Requirements:

Some knowledge of basic human behavior, mathematics, and interviewing techniques is required. Skill in operating a personal computer and associated office and agency software is also necessary. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, analyze information, and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions. A high school diploma supplemented with additional training and related work experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

A degree or coursework in Human Services is preferred. Experience in a Local Department of Social Services and processing public assistance is also desirable.

Special Requirements:
