Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Family Services Specialist to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a Family Services Specialist, you will play a critical role in providing support and services to older adults and adults with disabilities in our rural community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret and apply laws, policies, and regulations related to social services.
  • Monitor and coordinate programs to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Conduct investigations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable populations.
  • Complete biopsychosocial assessments using standardized tools.
  • Coordinate services to meet the needs of clients.
  • Interview and assess client needs, identifying relevant factors such as education, skills, abilities, interests, and support systems.
  • Present cases to determine appropriate services and develop service plans.
  • Provide case management services to monitor compliance and ensure effective service delivery.
  • Track expenditures and prepare budget estimates.
  • Complete necessary planning and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with other agencies and participate in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Conduct overall monitoring of programs to ensure quality and effectiveness.
  • Serve as a resource to clients and the community in area of expertise.
  • Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field or related field with a minimum of two years of experience in a Human Services area.
  • Knowledge of social work principles and practices, human behavior, and motivational theory.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interview, assess needs, counsel, and refer clients as needed.
  • Ability to develop and implement service plans to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Ability to make sound judgments within the framework of existing laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Ability to respond to client emotions to achieve service objectives.
  • Ability to plan and manage own work activities, including service delivery, reporting, and record-keeping.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships.
  • Ability to stay abreast of current trends and developments in the social work field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BSW or MSW degree.
  • Education and/or experience in Gerontology.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or training in Adult Protective Services.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with older adults and/or adults with disabilities and their families.
Special Requirements
  • DMV driving record check, pre-employment drug screen, and CPS and criminal history search.
  • Employee must be willing to work in community emergency response capacity in the event of a natural disaster or emergency.
  • Family Services Specialists are required to perform Child Protective and Adult Protective on-call duties after hours, nights, weekends, and holidays in a rotation with their team members.
