Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a Human Resources Generalist . Reporting to the Director of Human Resources and Operations, this role requires a comprehensive understanding of relevant policies, procedures, and legal standards, while providing support across various HR functions such as recruitment, onboarding, employee retention, separation, timekeeping, leave management, affiliate renewal, professional development, training, performance evaluation, policy documentation, and general advisory on HR regulations. The position will utilize independent judgment for routine to moderately complex matters, escalating unprecedented issues to higher management as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
Execute HR functions across multiple domains, including recruitment, staffing, timekeeping, payroll, compliance, compensation, benefits, performance management, employee records, training, and recognition programs. Utilize HR systems to process accurate and timely employee actions, as well as manage confidential documentation related to applications, employment, pay changes, and other sensitive HR materials. Act as Timekeeper, overseeing timekeeping processes, reviewing, and tracking time and leave submissions, and payroll processing. Serve as recruitment coordinator, advising management on employment and position recruitment strategies. Provide guidance to hiring managers and search committees to ensure compliance with organizational standards during the recruitment process. Facilitate new employee onboarding support, including paperwork, identification cards, parking arrangements, and welcome kits. Offer support and guidance on general leave policies and procedures. Manage the onboarding process for new hires, including documentation processing, employment eligibility verification, and completion of necessary forms. Assist with the issuance of annual faculty and executive contracts, as well as multiple adjunct and affiliate contract cycles. Support key affiliates with necessary paperwork and identification processes. Update and maintain position descriptions for staff roles. Participate in quarterly audits of HR activities and transactions. Complete employee transcript uploads and credential verification as needed. Address internal and external HR inquiries, providing assistance as required. Engage in HR Associate group meetings and training sessions. Communicate effectively with hourly employees and full-time staff, addressing general HR questions and inquiries. Assist with records management and imaging for retention purposes. Collaborate with senior HR team members to identify HR issues and support strategic solutions. Stay informed of evolving regulations and trends related to HR practices. Serve as a backup for other HR team members as needed. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of progressive HR experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Knowledge of principles and procedures related to various HR areas, including benefits, compensation, employee relations, recruitment, and HRIS. Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion. Familiarity with HR policies and procedures. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software. Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to convey HR information clearly. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail. Outstanding customer service skills and professionalism. General understanding of university, state, and federal HR policies and regulations. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines effectively. Proven capability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
