Advanced Practice Nurse
Department of General Pediatrics

The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a nursing professional who, through extensive clinical experience, education, and supervised practice in patient care at the master's or doctoral level, has developed expertise in a specialized area of healthcare services.

The APN exhibits the advanced knowledge, skills, and credentials necessary to operate in an advanced practice and specialized nursing role.

The APN holds the responsibility and accountability for assessing and managing patients, which includes ordering diagnostic tests, consultations, therapeutic interventions, and the daily implementation and evaluation of an appropriate care plan.

As an advanced practitioner, the APN plays a crucial role in the case management of patients with specialized health requirements.

The APN collaborates with the attending physician, primary nurse, and other healthcare professionals to deliver family-centered care.


The APN is responsible for developing and applying specialty practice standards and conducting research to enhance the quality of care provided to patients and their families.


Duties and Responsibilities include:


Utilize knowledge of anatomy, principles or theories of neurology, microbiology, physiology, psychology, human disabilities, pharmacology, gerontology, human growth and development, human developmental diseases, and medical terminology as applicable in the care setting and appropriate for the level of medical licensure.


Conduct thorough patient assessments and complete physical examinations, gather clinical data including vital signs, collect specimens, prepare patients for tests, therapies, or treatments, order and interpret medical laboratory test results, diagnose medical conditions, administer medications or treatments, and perform minor surgical procedures.

Possess knowledge of the information and techniques required to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities, including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive healthcare measures.


Ensure accurate patient coding for effective billing, maintain detailed patient medical records, and manage inventory of medical supplies and instruments.


Act as a resource and team leader during clinical shifts to facilitate the smooth flow of patient processing, treatment, and discharge, including patient triaging.

Serve as a mentor to new staff and/or physician assistant students.

Minimum qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Master's degree program.

Board Certified, NYS licensure, and DEA registration.

Successful completion and maintenance of ACLS and BLS certifications.

Able to quickly master all aspects of a computerized medical recordkeeping and billing system.

Must project a professional image and earn the confidence of others.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Must adhere to HIPAA compliance at all times.
