The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a highly trained nursing professional who, through extensive clinical experience and advanced education at the master's or doctoral level, has developed specialized expertise in delivering patient care services.

The NP exhibits the advanced competencies, skills, and credentials necessary to operate in an advanced practice role and provide specialized nursing care.

With a focus on patient assessment and management, the NP is responsible for ordering diagnostic tests, consultations, therapeutic interventions, and the ongoing implementation and evaluation of tailored care plans.

As a key member of the healthcare team, the NP plays a vital role in managing patients with complex health needs.

Collaboration with attending physicians, primary nurses, and other healthcare professionals is essential to delivering family-centered care.

The NP is accountable for establishing and applying specialty practice standards and conducting research to improve the quality of care provided to patients and their families.

Utilizing knowledge in anatomy, neurology, microbiology, physiology, psychology, pharmacology, and other relevant fields, the NP ensures comprehensive care in accordance with their medical licensure.

Responsibilities include conducting thorough patient assessments, performing physical examinations, collecting clinical data such as vital signs, preparing patients for tests and treatments, ordering and interpreting laboratory results, diagnosing medical conditions, administering medications, and performing minor surgical procedures.

This encompasses understanding symptoms, treatment options, drug properties and interactions, as well as preventive healthcare measures.

Accurate patient coding for billing purposes, maintaining detailed medical records, and managing medical supplies are also critical tasks.

As a resource and leader during clinical shifts, the NP ensures efficient patient processing, treatment, and discharge, including triaging patients effectively.

Mentorship of new staff and physician assistant students is also a key component of this role.

Requirements include graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Master's degree program, board certification, New York State licensure, and DEA registration.
Proficiency in computerized medical recordkeeping and billing systems is essential.
A professional demeanor and the ability to gain the trust of others are vital attributes.

This position may involve access to sensitive information pertaining to Albany Medical Center, its patients, affiliates, and partners, including HIPAA Protected Health Information and other federally and state-regulated data.
