Position Overview

This role as a Senior Legal Counsel is situated within the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) of the Office of the Attorney General. The EPD is responsible for enforcing environmental regulations, managing cases related to the State's natural resources, and defending orders issued by Texas administrative bodies. Legal professionals in this division represent the State in both state and federal courts across Texas, ensuring high-quality legal representation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance.
  • Represent the Office of the Attorney General in state and federal litigation, particularly in environmental enforcement matters.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, and memoranda.
  • Conduct thorough legal research and investigations, presenting findings and conclusions.
  • Participate in administrative hearings and manage the discovery process.
  • Analyze complex factual and legal issues, gathering evidence through interviews and depositions.
  • Prepare cases for trial and advise clients on legal matters.
  • Testify in hearings, trials, and legislative sessions.
  • Coordinate and oversee legal and administrative activities.
  • Draft legislative bills and amendments.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in specific legal areas.
  • Maintain current knowledge essential for performing job functions.
  • Adhere to all agency policies and procedures, particularly those related to ethics and confidentiality.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensure: Active member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
  • Experience: A minimum of three years as a licensed attorney, with a focus on litigation.
  • Skills: Proficient in legal research, writing, analysis, and effective communication.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience: Five years in environmental law or civil litigation.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with legal principles relevant to the Environmental Protection Division.
  • Leadership: Ability to supervise and guide the work of others.
