Synthetic Biology Researcher

Switch Bioworks, a pioneering biotech startup, is seeking a highly skilled Associate Scientist or Senior Research Associate to join our team. As a key member of our research team, you will be responsible for developing new microbial-based agricultural biotechnology solutions to address the pressing issue of sustainable agriculture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and Construct Genetic Circuits: Develop and implement genetic circuits in non-model bacteria to enhance plant growth-promoting characteristics.
- Assay Development and Execution: Design and conduct biochemical, protein, and physiological assays in non-model bacteria to assess plant growth-promoting potential.
- Independent Troubleshooting: Independently identify and resolve laboratory experiment issues.
- Plant Propagation Assays: Conduct plant propagation assays to evaluate the effectiveness of microbial-based solutions.
- Scientific Strategy Contribution: Collaborate with the research team to develop and implement scientific strategies.
- Communication and Presentation: Clearly and effectively present experimental proposals, results, and next steps to team members in both written and verbal formats.
- Staying Current with Scientific Literature: Stay up-to-date with the latest scientific research and share findings with the team.
- Culture of Safety: Promote a culture of safety in the workplace.
- Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and maintain detailed records of experimental data and perform data analysis.
- Biological Product Understanding: Develop a deep understanding of biological products, including natural product chemistry and microbial physiology of bacteria, filamentous bacteria, and fungi.

Qualifications:
- Full-time Availability: Ability to work full-time in the US and be on-site in the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, synthetic biology, genetic engineering, microbiology, or a related field, with 3+ years of relevant industry experience.
- Engineering Bacterial Chromosomes: At least 2 years of experience with engineering bacterial chromosomes.
- Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, including a strong attention to detail.
- Aseptic Technique and Microorganism Culture: Extensive knowledge and experience with aseptic technique and the culture of microorganisms.
- Communication and Collaboration: Excellent oral and written communication skills, problem-solving skills, and a detail-oriented approach.
- Physical Demands: Ability to work standing/walking for long periods of time and possess the dexterity to handle delicate equipment regularly.
Preferred Experience:
- Non-Model Bacteria Engineering: Experience with engineering the chromosomes of non-model bacteria, particularly Gram-positive bacteria.
- Biochemical and Protein Assays: Experience with biochemical and protein assays.
- Synthetic Biology in Bacteria: Experience with synthetic biology in bacteria.
