Job Title: Assistant Principal, Elementary

At Columbus City Schools, we are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Assistant Principal to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of academic instruction to students in grades PK-5 and supervising the daily operations of an assigned school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the day-to-day activities of building staff, including hiring, training, counseling, and evaluating staff performance.
  • Assist the Principal in overseeing the delivery of academic instruction, ensuring learning experiences consistent with the mission statement and instructional goals of the building and district.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff engaged in student instruction, promoting improvement of curriculum and instruction within the building.
  • Monitor student achievement and progress toward instructional goals and objectives, initiating corrective action as necessary.
  • Administer the student behavior and discipline program, counseling and providing guidance to students regarding personal, academic, and behavioral issues.
  • Work cooperatively with intervention assistance teams, guidance counselors, and other stakeholders to implement initiatives to increase academic success and ensure students achieve their grade level.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute student activities and programs, including recognition events and school events.
  • Assist in developing the master schedule and class scheduling of students.
  • Monitor school building areas to ensure safe conditions and compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Manage student transportation and perform the duties of Athletic Director/Coordinator, responsible for administering the athletic program for the building.
  • Develop and maintain a positive and cooperative atmosphere, ensuring rules are fairly and consistently administered.
  • Support the implementation of after-school activities and events, attending activities and ensuring acceptable student behavior.
  • Prepare or oversee the completion of required documentation and reports.
  • Promote positive school-community relations, communicating school messages to parents and the community, and maintaining visibility with students, parents, and the community.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with departments and officials of appropriate agencies.
  • Resolve problems, situations, or issues in a collaborative, tactful, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Perform the duties of Principal in their absence.
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices, trends, and new developments in middle school curriculum, instruction, and building administration, recommending changes to operations and instructional strategies as necessary.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Education or a related field.
  • Five or more years of related teaching and administrative experience in a K-12 environment.
  • One year minimum of school-based administrator experience.
  • Valid Ohio Department of Education Principal License or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and district policies related to assigned functions.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and work productively with all levels of district staff, students, parents, and the general public.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to handle problem situations in a tactful, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Written and computer skills necessary to maintain various departmental records, documents, and reports.
  • Analytical ability to develop plans of action to address a variety of issues and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Skills necessary to provide guidance, train, and review the work of assigned staff.
