The Town of Westwood is in search of a meticulous and reliable Senior Accounting Specialist to enhance the functionality of the Accounting Department.

The preferred candidate will demonstrate exceptional analytical abilities, effective time-management skills, and a professional attitude, contributing positively to the Finance team.


Key Responsibilities:


Manage the comprehensive Accounts Payable process, ensuring thorough review and data entry of all billing schedules from various departments while adhering to UMAS accounting standards.

Oversee the Accounts Payable operations by supervising the activities of approximately 20 municipal and educational Accounts Payable personnel.

Provide training and guidance to staff across municipal and educational departments regarding all aspects of the Accounts Payable process.

Ensure the execution of accounting and bookkeeping tasks related to Accounts Payable, maintaining compliance with state and local regulations, verifying the availability of Town budget funds, and ensuring the accuracy of financial information.

Engage with departments to address inquiries and resolve discrepancies.

Prepare and reconcile schedules for all grants, special revenue, and capital project funds; collaborate with departments to guarantee precision.

Timely and accurate preparation of schedules is essential.
Maintain a fixed asset schedule within the computer system, monitoring weekly warrants and determining necessary data for the fixed asset system.
Examine invoices and billing schedules for correctness, fund availability, compliance with accounting protocols, and proper authorization. Investigate and respond to inquiries from town departments and vendors regarding Accounts Payable matters.
Record Accounts Payable transactions in the General Ledger and perform account verification, balancing, and reconciliation. Generate and submit electronic check reconciliation transmittals to the banking institution.

Compile and distribute monthly account statements to town departments, along with departmental reports that include budget status, receivables, special revenue, and grant activities.

Collaborate with departments to rectify discrepancies and inaccuracies.

Qualifications and Experience:

An Associate's degree in business, accounting, or a related discipline is required; a Bachelor's degree is preferred. Candidates should have three years of progressively responsible experience in accounting roles, with a preference for experience in a municipal environment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

A solid understanding of municipal accounting and financial regulations is necessary. The ability to maintain precise and detailed financial records and closely monitor financial activities is essential. Strong leadership skills are required to foster cooperation among decentralized accounts.

Compensation and Benefits:
This is a full-time, 37-hour per week union position with a salary range of $41.89 per hour across eight steps. The Town of Westwood offers a competitive benefits package.
