Position Overview:
  • The Histopathology Technician is responsible for preparing tissue specimens for detailed analysis by a pathologist.
  • This role involves independent execution of tasks that require sound judgment and problem-solving capabilities, under the general oversight of a supervisor or lead technician.
  • Responsibilities include all functions of a Histo Tech I, along with maintaining and programming tissue processors, executing special staining techniques, preparing various staining solutions, decalcifying bone samples, and utilizing automated slide and cassette printers.
Qualifications Required:

Educational Background:
  • A minimum of an Associate's degree in Histotechnology is required.
OR
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree with at least 60 semester hours of coursework, including 12 semester hours in both biology and chemistry, along with successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology training program or a clinical histology rotation in a NAACLS accredited laboratory.
OR
  • An equivalent military certification (equivalent to a degree) with histopathology or hospital specialty training in biology, chemistry, and related fields, qualifying for the certification exam.
Experience:
  • A minimum of one year of relevant laboratory experience or in a healthcare environment is necessary.
  • A clinical internship as part of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnology program will count as one year of clinical experience. Without a completed college degree and/or NAACLS accredited Histotechnology program and certification, at least one year of clinical histology experience with a minimum of six months in a relevant laboratory is required.
  • Advancement to this role is possible for staff in the Histo Tech Prep Tech position who meet the eligibility criteria for HT1, complete educational requirements, and maintain satisfactory annual performance reviews.
Certification:
  • Eligibility to sit for HT (ASCP) certification is preferred but not mandatory.
