About the Role:

We are seeking a skilled Grossing Technician to join our team at Johns Hopkins Medicine. As a key member of our Surgical Pathology department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accurate and efficient processing of surgical specimens.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accession and process surgical specimens with supervision from an attending pathologist or Pathology Assistant.
  • Perform gross examination of non-complicated surgical specimens, including obtaining specimens from operation rooms and performing appropriate examination.
  • Package tissues, slides, and blocks for transportation, maintaining accurate records and following up on misplaced specimens.
  • Responsible for daily care and maintenance of the grossing room, including cryostats, staining setups, cameras, printers, electronic labelers, and stocking of supplies.
  • Monitor specimen storage and discard, and perform tasks such as photographing, radiography, and microwave fixation as needed.
  • Work safely with hazardous waste and chemicals, adhering to regulations and guidelines.

Requirements:

  • An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or an earned high school diploma with some completed education or training in related science or medical technology courses.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in a Surgical Pathology or Histopathology grossing room or equivalent, with at least 3 months of documented laboratory training and experience/knowledge of pathology medical terminology.
