Position Overview:


The Department of Comparative Pathobiology is dedicated to supporting faculty and staff engaged in teaching, research, and diagnostic services for both small and large animal hospitals, as well as external organizations.

Key educational focuses include Clinical Skills, Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Biochemistry, Organ Systems and Pathophysiology, and Veterinary Pathology. Research initiatives encompass reproductive biology, neuroscience, and biotechnology.

Faculty members offer anatomic and clinical pathology diagnostic services through the Cummings Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, enhancing patient care within the school's hospitals.


Key Responsibilities:


The laboratory technician will collaborate with course instructors to assess and fulfill the requirements for teaching laboratories, ensuring effective setup and management of laboratory sessions in both professional and graduate programs.


Courses that may fall under this role include microbiology, parasitology, physiology, and pathology, covering both pre-clinical (e.g., general pathology, pathophysiology labs) and clinical (e.g., clinical pathology 4th year rotation wet labs) aspects.

Graduate-level courses that involve wet lab components may also be included in this position's responsibilities.

Daily tasks will vary based on the teaching laboratory schedule, providing diverse exposure to various areas and courses on the Cummings School campus.

Essential functions and responsibilities of the Laboratory Technician include:


1. Collaborating with course instructors to determine the structure and requirements of teaching laboratories; managing inventory, ordering, and overseeing supply needs for relevant courses.


2. Preparing materials and equipment for teaching laboratories, including microscopes and specimens; assisting instructors with technical procedures as necessary during laboratory sessions; ensuring cleanliness post-laboratory.

3. Upholding the laboratory's compliance with all necessary biosafety regulations.

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge and skills typically acquired through a High School diploma or equivalent (GED or HiSet).
- Experience or familiarity with animals in a professional context.
- Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Excel.
- Strong organizational capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in dissection, embalming cadavers, or soft tissue plastination.
- Proven ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Understanding of anatomy and anatomical terminology.
