Compensation: $80,000 - $90,000, plus a $12,000 Temporary Cost of Living Allowance & MWA Benefits

Position Summary

The Dean of Students, under the guidance of the Assistant Principal of Student Conduct and Discipline, collaborates with the Dean of Student Discipline to foster strong relationships with students and families within the MWA community. This role is essential in promoting adherence to the MWA mission, behavioral expectations, and codes of conduct as outlined in the MWA Student-Parent/Guardian Handbook. Key responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating restorative practice meetings with individuals, small groups, and entire classes.
  • Providing training for educators and staff on restorative techniques to effectively address Level 1 and 2 infractions.
  • Conducting classroom observations and offering guidance on classroom management strategies.
  • Investigating reports and referrals related to Level 3 and Level 4 infractions, applying appropriate consequences as per the Student-Parent/Guardian Handbook.
  • Maintaining a visible presence during various school activities, including passing periods, breaks, and lunchtime.
  • Referring students to support services for behavioral concerns, ensuring they receive necessary assessments and interventions.

The Dean of Students will also analyze and respond to data regarding student attendance, disciplinary actions, and academic performance to ensure alignment with MWA's success criteria.

Core Responsibilities

Restorative Practices

  • Lead restorative meetings, including one-on-one, small group, and classroom-wide sessions, along with student/staff check-ins.
  • Train faculty and student support staff on restorative practices, equipping them with skills to manage incidents effectively.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of restorative practice sessions and summarize key themes and learnings on a regular basis.

Student Conduct and Discipline

  • Investigate referrals and reports of student conduct, interviewing involved parties and applying consequences as outlined in the Student-Parent/Guardian Handbook.
  • Document all suspensions and related incidents accurately in the school management system.
  • Identify students exhibiting concerning behavioral patterns and facilitate discussions with families regarding expectations and interventions.
  • Conduct follow-ups with affected students and staff after incidents to assess support needs.
  • Assist in delivering professional development for staff on discipline policies and procedures.

System Development and Management

  • Communicate and document all student referrals, suspensions, and restorative meetings with parents and guardians, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
  • Organize documentation related to student meetings and referrals, maintaining accurate records.
  • Collaborate with the student support services team to address emerging issues affecting students.
  • Share restorative practice data with the community to highlight positive trends and outcomes.

Student and Family Support

  • Build trusting relationships with students, families, and staff to foster open communication.
  • Respond to incidents and investigations with transparency and timeliness, guided by the Student-Parent/Guardian Handbook.
  • Engage in parent meetings to educate and inform families about discipline and school policies.

Reporting

  • Monitor and report progress against institutional goals in collaboration with school leadership.
  • Ensure accurate reporting of discipline data to relevant agencies.
  • Uphold safety and well-being standards for students and staff, adhering to mandated reporting requirements.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years working with students aged 10-19 and families from underserved communities.
  • Commitment to MWA's mission and supporting first-generation students.
  • Data-driven approach to developing support pathways for students and families.
  • Knowledge of California Education Code regarding student behavior.
  • Familiarity with Restorative Justice and Positive Interventions frameworks.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to engage in challenging conversations.

Skills:

  • Exceptional communication skills with students, families, and staff.
  • Ability to enforce school policies while addressing student and family concerns.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Collaborative and independent work capabilities.
  • Proficiency in technology and educational platforms.

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Employment eligibility includes background checks and health clearances.
  • California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Certificate of Clearance required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's or advanced degree.
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
