About the Role

The University of California, Irvine is seeking an experienced and dynamic Associate Director of Residential Living to join our team. As a key member of our Student Housing department, you will play a critical role in shaping the residential experience for our students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise Residence Life Coordinators and support staff, administering the resident and community support services component of a Student Life program.
  • Provide vision, leadership, and oversee the day-to-day operations for Graduate and Family Housing resident relations, student conduct, and after-hours services.
  • Directly supervise Residence Life Coordinators and indirectly supervise 25 paraprofessional staff: Housing Assistants.
  • Make recommendations concerning improvements of program/function to the Director of Residential Living and Learning.
  • Provide support after hours to residents in crisis.
  • Respond to questions, suggestions, and complaints.
  • Conduct welfare checks as necessary.
  • Serve as a member of the Graduate and Family Housing and Student Housing Emergency Response Team.
  • Assess community emergencies and determine appropriate actions.
Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of University and departmental policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Skill to establish and interpret service contracts.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing and administering a budget.
  • Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
  • Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes, or services, to make improvements.
  • Demonstrated managerial skill in planning, organizing, monitoring, and controlling multiple operational functions and services.
  • Strong skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication; multitasking and intercultural competence and uses these skills to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Ability to compose reports, letters, instructions, and other documents with attention to clarity, tone, composition, and mechanics.
  • Strong skills in project and program management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a broad variety of individuals in person, on the phone, and in writing.
  • Advanced knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Housing/Graduate Life specialization.
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of risk assessment principles along with the ability to evaluate risks and the likelihood of consequences.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, decision-making, and implementation skills.
  • Strong leadership skills to motivate employees and influence attitudes and behaviors.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and lead.
  • Ability to create, improve, and monitor work standards, procedures, and systems that ensure effective service delivery.
  • Proven skill in interpreting, enforcing, and explaining University policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in the administration of student conduct, policy enforcement, and adjudication of disciplinary cases, and facilitating meetings.
  • Interpersonal and cultural competence skills to effectively communicate with and support a wide variety of people of diverse backgrounds, including understanding and respect for cultural, ethnic, and individual differences.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of constituencies, including administrators, staff, students, and vendors.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in group/team settings.
  • Ability to work independently and to follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Skill in taking initiative, setting priorities, and managing time to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to respond with flexibility and efficiency to frequent changes in task focus, competing priorities, and multiple deadlines.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in residence life, programming, policy review, student conduct, and student services.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree.
Special Conditions
  • Must pass background check and DMV clearance required.
  • Per the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), this position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter. The selected candidate will be required to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect as defined by CANRA and will be required to sign a Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse prior to commencing employment.
  • Must be willing to assist in the event of an emergency/natural disaster.
  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime, nights, and weekends.
  • This person serves as a manager on-call to provide support and assistance after hours.
  • Must maintain CPR and First Aid Certified.
