Research Laboratory Technician

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated research laboratory technician to contribute to groundbreaking studies aimed at unraveling the molecular foundations of vascular anomalies and heart diseases, particularly in the cerebral vasculature. The ideal candidate will be proactive, eager to acquire new skills, highly organized, and capable of thriving in a collaborative research setting. A solid background in molecular biology or biochemistry is essential, and experience with cell culture, zebrafish, or murine models is advantageous.
Key Responsibilities
The selected individual will undertake a variety of tasks integral to the research objectives, including:
- Animal Model Management: Engage in the care and upkeep of mouse or zebrafish colonies, perform embryo dissection, and prepare fixed samples for various staining techniques, including X-gal and in-situ hybridization.
- Laboratory Upkeep: Collaborate with team members to maintain laboratory cleanliness, manage inventory, and coordinate equipment repairs.
- Molecular Techniques: Execute a range of molecular biology procedures such as DNA isolation, PCR, and gel electrophoresis, while meticulously documenting experimental outcomes.
- Data Analysis: Conduct basic statistical analyses using spreadsheet software to interpret experimental data and present findings in a clear format.
- Additional Duties: Perform other relevant tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of one year in a laboratory setting, with student experience considered. A bachelor's degree may substitute for experience.
Preferred Skills
- Fundamental understanding of molecular biology principles.
- Experience with mouse or zebrafish husbandry.
- Proficiency in PCR-based techniques.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Office applications.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Familiarity with database management software.
Physical Requirements
This role may require prolonged periods of standing and fine motor skills for laboratory tasks and animal care.
