Job Title: Lab and Research Technician 2, Department of Neuroscience

The Department of Neuroscience and the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia at the University of Virginia seek a highly motivated and detail-oriented laboratory technician to assist with research projects and laboratory management in the Coutinho-Budd laboratory.

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in research related to cellular and molecular mechanisms of glial biology in Drosophila melanogaster. The Coutinho-Budd lab is particularly interested in understanding molecular mechanisms underlying glial function and interactions with nearby neurons and glia in the healthy and diseased nervous system.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform analyses, participate in research or clinical work involving treatment operations and experiments with animals, including care and feeding, cage cleaning and sanitization, and observation during post-operative or treatment periods.
  • Coordinate and participate in a variety of routine technical duties by providing assistance to clinical and research staff in testing, determinations, and experiments.
  • Assist in evaluating research methods, procedures, and techniques, based on established objectives.
  • Provide basic assistance to researchers in manipulating, computing, and analyzing data using specialized statistical computer software.
  • May perform certain surgical procedures on small lab animals.
  • Assist with training other staff members on procedures; may supervise students or volunteers.
  • Assist Principal Investigators and senior staff in developing new strategies and techniques for experimentation.
Requirements:
  • Education: Associate's degree
  • Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in a related science will be considered in lieu of experience.
